My 3.5 years in Vancouver have been awesome and challenging. The chance to use my photography to peel back the layers of this city in an attempt to find its true soul has been a thrill. In doing so, I’ve learned that the image that outsiders often have of Vancouver is nothing more than a soulless facade perpetuated by the city tourist board and a criminal syndicate of developers.
Those of us that truly live here experience a city of incredible energy and a heartfelt desire for wanting to achieve greatness. The artists, musicians, designers, and other creatives give this city its character. Young urban planners are desperately pushing forward-thinking urban design in areas like transit and public space, while NIMBY Baby Boomer bureaucrats squash their advances with stubborn ignorance. Vancouver’s creative and progressive minds are facing the everyday struggle to keep Vancouver from succumbing to its fate as a massive farm of superstores and suburban design catering to nuclear families and corporate interests.
